UK – 10th June, 2018: Doctors and nurses who make 'honest mistakes' while treating patients should not face prosecution, Jeremy Hunt said last night.

The Health Secretary accepted the main findings of a review into the use of gross negligence manslaughter charges for health workers amid concerns that fear of criminal proceedings was having a 'chilling effect' on the medical profession.

US – 6th June, 2018: A patient comes into a hospital emergency department, troubled by chest pain that comes and goes. The doctor asks some questions, draws on clinical experience, and orders a test to rule out — or in — a heart attack.

That test could be a stress test that tracks the patient with an electrocardiogram while running on a treadmill. Or it could be a more specific but also more invasive test: an angiography that reveals blocked coronary arteries on X-ray after the patient has been injected with dye.

Michigan, US – 6th June, 2018: A terminal cancer patient given months to live after seven types of chemotherapy failed has been 'cured' by a 'miracle' injection.

Judy Perkins is the first woman in the world to have her breast cancer completely eradicated using a pioneering technique to turbo charge her immune system.

Wexford, Ireland – 14th June, 2018: A couple whose son was stillborn following medical negligence have hit out at the State Claims Agency for using suicidal ideation as a marker for measuring psychological distress.

Mignon and Derek Underwood’s son Conor was stillborn in Wexford General Hospital in September 2012. Following a legal battle the couple secured an apology in the High Court for failures in the care provided.

Atlanta – US – 3rd June, 2018: Nearly 100 women say they have suffered complications after a US dermatologist arranged to have herself filmed singing and dancing during their surgery, according to an attorney.

Dr Windell Boutte posted videos to YouTube of herself dancing and singing along to music mid-operation, occasionally with assistants joining in with the dancing. The videos sometimes showed the bare skin of unconscious patients lying on the operating table while Dr Boutte danced around them.

Nairobi – 13th June, 2018: Nairobi Women Hospital and Insurance firm ICEA Lion are tussling in court over Sh54 million compensation awarded to a patient in a medical negligence case.

The hospital has gone back to the court, claiming that the insurance firm agreed to pay Purity Kemunto’s son beyond their agreed policy limit.

Iowa, US – 13th June, 2018: A Sioux County jury on Wednesday awarded nearly $30 million to the family of a Hull, Iowa, woman who died after having a CT scan at a local hospital.

Jurors found that Dr. Roy Slice was negligent in his treatment of Carrie DeJongh and that Sioux Center Health was liable for his negligence. Jurors awarded DeJongh's husband and children $29.5 million for DeJongh's pain and suffering and the loss of consortium suffered by her husband and their children.

Peterborough, UK – 11th June, 2018: Dr Andy Gregg (48) was arrested on suspicion of gross negligent manslaughter on March 15 last year and was on police bail. The consultant anaesthetist was being investigated over allegations he “inappropriately hastened the death of patients in his care,” allegations he strenuously denied.

North Carolina, US – 21st June, 2018: For nearly eight years, a Wilmington doctor treated a woman who sought his help for her lower back pain. But after years of being prescribed high doses of highly-addictive narcotics, the mother of four was involuntarily admitted for addiction detoxification.

Istanbul, Turkey – 21st June, 2018: Some 78 percent of emergency room doctors have been exposed to violence by patients’ relatives at Turkish hospitals in the last year, according to a research by the Emergency Association of Turkey. 

The research was undertaken by the association’s board member Prof. Dr. Başak Bayram, who surveyed a total of 713 Turkish doctors working at emergency services.
