Isle of Wight, UK – 12th April:  The Isle of Wight NHS Trust has paid 22-year-old Jake Hill £125,000 in compensation after misdiagnosing his condition as a child.

Jake, of The Fairway, Sandown, was just 12 years old when he first attended St Mary's Hospital suffering from hip pain.

Toronto, Canada – 19th April:  As medical director of Canada’s highest-profile weight-loss surgery clinic, Patrick Yau had impressive stats.

He says he performed over 6,000 gastric-band operations at Slimband Inc. and elsewhere, more than any other Canadian surgeon. And the company seemed until recently to be booming, its glossy website full of glowing patient testimonials, its billboards showing off satisfied customers.

Ottawa, Canada – 17th April:  A former master warrant officer with the Canadian Armed Forces says she developed PTSD and had to leave the military after having her kidney removed as a result of being wrongly diagnosed with cancer.

She said she was told at the time that the mistake was no one’s fault and that “medicine is not an exact science.”

Toronto, Canada – 18th April:  After spending five days at the Brampton Civic Hospital, Jamie-Lee Ball was begging the nurses to discharge her. 

Sitting in the hospital’s emergency room, the 24-year-old had collapsed in extreme pain from internal bleeding in her abdomen. The nurses had scrambled to find her a stretcher while she waited to be seen. Ball didn’t know it at that the time, but she would spend the entirety of her five-day stay at the hospital lying on that same stretcher — in a hallway.

London, UK – 28th April:  A prominent breast surgeon whose victims accused him of playing God with their lives faces a life sentence after a jury convicted him Friday of carrying out unnecessary operations that maimed some of his victims for life.

The Nottingham Crown Court jury found Ian Paterson guilty of 17 counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and three counts of unlawful wounding. Prosecutors say the 59-year-old doctor lied to patients or exaggerated their risk of cancer to persuade them to have surgery.

London, UK – 29th April:  NHS hospitals face paying millions in compensation to family members whose loved-ones undergo botched medical procedures after a grandmother successfully claimed for suffering PTSD following the birth of her granddaughter.

Experts say the High Court ruling “turns the tide” in favor of family members claiming compensation in cases of medical negligence.

London, UK – 30th April:  Victims of the rogue breast surgeon Ian Paterson would be denied justice under a new scheme to limit claims against the NHS for botched operations, patient safety groups have warned.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, a coalition of ten charities say the scheme to cap legal costs payable to lawyers in almost two thirds of medical negligence cases would bar the most vulnerable from compensation.
