In a shocking incident, a hospital and its doctors were held guilty of negligence and were slapped compensation of more than forty lacs.
A patient, suffering from severe stomach pain, was taken to Habra General Hospital where the doctor diagnosed him with gallbladder stones and advised an immediate surgery. For reasons known best to itself, the Hospital however operated upon the patient a week after he was brought there.
Despite suffering from immense pain even after the surgery, the patient was discharged from the hospital a week after. It seemed that laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed by the doctors was done in a shoddy manner, as the patient’s condition worsened and eventually he died while he was being taken to another hospital. The post-mortem gave shocking revelations – a metallic clip was left in the patient’s abdomen and there was presence of 19 stones in the gallbladder bed and adjacent areas!
The West Bengal State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission was appalled by the dismal state of affairs at the Habra General Hospital. And the Hospital’s complete silence on the matter without refuting any allegation was enough for the Commission to serve a quick ruling. The hospital, treating doctors and the MO were found liable for their shocking failure in treating the patient properly and leaving metallic objects, and were collectively fined over forty six lacs!
